Your Astrological Birth chart is cast for the moment of first breath at the time of birth. Breath, air, oxygen and time represent the outer material world and our relationship to it. This relationship is deep and intimate and, beyond the immediate environment, it actually even encompasses a larger celestial reality. This fact is measurable and demonstrable and what it reveals is awe inspiring. More importantly, the information and insight that can be gleaned from this all important moment is practically useful and can even prove to be healing.

Breath, Prana, Ch’I – each denotes a mystical spiritual tradition. Yet, beyond the ethereal implications of this mysticism, it is actually very scientific. In simple terms, reality has inner and outer layers. The outer are complex enough yet are empirical – can be gauged with the five senses. The inner is much more subtle. The advances of modern science have penetrated deeply into the inner subtle layers, yet there is more and the notion of dimension is again becoming popular. So mysterious are these inner dimensional layers that physicists use words such as magical, mysterious, matrix to describe them. Beyond the mystical nuances, however, each can be seen to be the inner layers of the outer reality. In this respect, we can see that there is order and purpose at play. True mysticism recognizes that the outer reality actually finds its source in inner reality. The big Band Theory led us to believe that all of creation is random. This position is no longer substantiated however. Believing that all of creation is random is its form of belligerence and even of madness.  

It is the interest of Astrology to demonstrate the larger implications of this ‘spiritual’ moment, the time of first breath. This is the moment for which a birth chart is cast. (If the time is unknown, a chart can still be made, but will be less precise. Also, an unknown time can be determined by way of asking questions about key significant events in a person’s life. Yes, the probability of events and when they will occur is pre-ordained.)

Knowing the probabilities is not simply about defense, it is about respectful attunement. Further, with this awareness a person can become more consciously aware of the cycles, rhythms and themes of their life. What are the core challenges in a person’s life? What are the gifts? When will any given cycle begin, culminate and end. What cycles are active this year, this month, today? How can I know them and make practical use of them?
