Astrology & Alignments of 2008 to 12/21/2012
When asked about the meaning of the end of one Mayan Calendar round and the beginning of a new 5200 year round, the Mayan elders have been quoted as saying, “It is the beginning of heaven and the end of hell on earth.” This statement has been floating on the collective airwaves for many years and especially dates back to the summer of 1987 at the “Harmonic Convergence” presented by Jose Arguelles, noted author of the Mayan Factor, the Dreamspell Calendar and a long list of other titles. That was the year and event that the western world was popularly introduced to the Mayan Calendar. Among other things, this activation of awareness and consciousness was the beginning of a mass grass roots movement that has continued to grow steadily ever since. There remains controversy over the ‘true’ calendar and end date. Opposition to Arguelles’ seemingly cavalier decision to create the Dreamspell which is, at best, a bridge between the traditional “Long Count” calendar and the Gregorian calendar, which is popularly in use all over the world, continues. Those devoted to the Long Count claim that the end date is actually in April of 2011. In light of the duration of the calendar, this discrepancy of 1.5 years or so is something of a moot point. With the end date for the Mayan Calendar, according to the Dreamspell and which seems to hold sway over most people, marked as December 21, 2012 - the Winter Solstice - now less than 4 years away, a mix of curiosity and concern about the implications of this fateful date and event continues to rise. When we consider the words, ‘…beginning of heaven and the end of hell on earth’, there is reason to feel optimistic. Perhaps it implies that the materialism that has steadily emerged in the world and the negative consequences of science and mass industrialization upon the environment as well as upon the future of humanity is nearing an end and we are finding solutions. Perhaps a new spiritual awareness is emerging, just in time, which will help us to help one another at an international level rather than resort to the traditional practice of war. However, given the facts that the entire world is currently plunging into an economic crisis while the world population steadily grows, the ecology continues to deteriorate, and the death toll from countless diseases mounts, to name but a few of the challenges that every nation in the world now faces, the word ‘hell’ takes on added weight in the sentence. So, given this mix of dread and hope, the question may be asked, what does the planetary alignments as illustrated in Western Astrology have to say about all this? So far, everything from the predictions of Michel de Nostradamus about World War III, to a polar axis shift, to cataclysms caused by a rogue planet in our solar system called Nibiru, to severe solar winds heating up the planet to unsustainable levels and carrying deadly radiation, to the appearance of aliens and a host of natural disasters, to the last pope and the emergence of the anti-Christ have each gained at least some popularity. In simple terms, bleak scenarios are rampant and fear levels are steadily rising. Of course, many continue to disregard Astrology but more and more people are looking to Astrology both in desperation for answers, but also because the holistic paradigm is steadily emerging and replacing that of the Mechanistic world view set in motion by the likes of Isaac Newton and Rene Descartes over 3.5 centuries ago. The fact is, Astrology does work and it can offer valuable insights to assist individuals and humanity as a whole. Just because science claims that it is not scientific does not mean it does not work. In fact, the modern advances of physics and quantum mechanics and string theory, chaos theory and so forth are rapidly serving to undermine the staunch, dogmatic positions of science. These and other advances are demonstrating that the world is not nearly as linear and mechanized and empirical as the staunch proponents of science assumed and asserted over the past few centuries. The fact is, that by way of the basic practices of Western Astrology we can clearly see patterns which illustrate outer events. Not surprisingly, the next several years does indeed host a series of very powerful planetary alignments that do coincide with the dramatic ending of the Mayan Calendar. Yes, we can see parallels and crossovers. By way of gaining some understanding of what these alignments are, when they will occur and what they imply, we can choose to work consciously with them and thereby make use of them to successfully navigate through the turbulent waters of change that we now find ourselves challenged to overcome.
